Early Life and Education

Demis Hassabis was born on July 27, 1976, in London, England. He developed a keen interest in chess at a young age, becoming a national champion at age 13. Hassabis went on to study computer science at the University of Cambridge, where he earned a double first-class degree in 1997.

He pursued a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at University College London, focusing on computational modeling of the brain. While at UCL, he met Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman, who would later become co-founders of DeepMind.

Career and Research

In 2009, Hassabis co-founded DeepMind Technologies with Legg and Suleyman. DeepMind is a London-based artificial intelligence research company that has made significant advancements in machine learning, particularly in the field of reinforcement learning.

Under Hassabis' leadership, DeepMind has developed AlphaGo, a computer program that defeated the world's top Go players, and AlphaFold, a system that can predict the 3D structure of proteins.

Hassabis is a vocal advocate for the responsible development and use of AI. He has warned against the potential risks of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and has called for international cooperation to ensure AI benefits humanity.

Awards and Recognition

Hassabis has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to AI. In 2016, he was named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people. He was knighted in 2018 for services to artificial intelligence.

In 2022, Hassabis was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to technology and innovation.

Hassabis is married to Eleanor Sevenoaks, a former ballet dancer. They have two children together.
